on November 19, 2011

Search engine optimization or SEO is an internet marketing strategy that is constantly developing and evolving. The top search engines are regularly tweaking their search algorithms. With that said, some SEO practices and strategies lose their relevance as a result of these algorithm changes. However, there is one SEO technique that never loses its relevance. It’s been used from the very beginnings of the internet marketing industry and it still remains to be one of the best SEO tactics today. This technique we’re referring to is the process of link-building.

There are numerous ways on how you can build links towards your websites. You can do reciprocal link exchanges. You can buy links if you have the budget. You can manually build links using online articles directories and social bookmarking sites. All these are good and effective strategies. However, there is one link-building technique that isn’t that popular but it’s very effective in helping websites to rank higher in the search engines. This link-building technique is called a linkwheel. What is a linkwheel, you might ask. Well, in the simplest of terms, it’s a bunch of links on numerous websites that point towards a website, only this time, the links also point to each other. For example, three links from Blogger, WordPress, and Tumblr point to your website. In order to create a link wheel, there should also be a link on Blogger that points to WordPress or Tumblr and vice versa.

In order to create a linkwheel for SEO, you need the following:

l  several unique articles or some other type of online content relevant to your main website

l  you must have accounts in a lot of web 2.0 sites like blogging sites, article directories, writing sites, etc.

l  your main website or blog which will be the center of the linkwheel you’re going to build

Here’s how you should go about in creating the linkwheel. To make it a lot easier to understand, let’s say you have a website and you’re going to build a linkwheel around it using web 2.0 sites namely Blogger, WordPress, LiveJournal and EzineArticles. Since you are going to use 4 web 2.0 sites, make sure you have four unique articles as well.

  1. Post article #1 on Blogger. Make sure it contains a link that points to your main website.
  2. Post article #2 on WordPress. This time it should contain two links, one pointing to your website and one pointing to the article you posted earlier on Blogger.
  3. Post article #3 on LiveJournal containing two links to your main website and to the article you posted on WordPress.
  4. Post article #4 on EzineArticles containing links to your main website and to the article you posted on LiveJournal.
  5. Go back and edit the article you posted on Blogger so that it will also contain a link towards the article on EzineArticles.

That’s it. You’ve completed a linkwheel for SEO around your website. Always remember that there is no limit as to how many web 2.0 sites you are going to use. Just keep repeating the process until you complete the linkwheel.
